Who Were the Wives in the Early Church?
Is the bible really opposed to women? Must wives submit to their husbands? Is it true that women cannot teach men? In this series, I want to take a closer look at these difficult texts and suggest that there’s more to them than meets the eye. But in order to do that, we first need to look at what life was like for ancient wives and ask: was it any different for the Christian wives?
Does the NT REALLY Say Wives Must Submit?
In the last video, we saw that wives in the early church were no different to wives in the broader culture. Life was a struggle for everyone, and Christians were no exception. But in other ways, the Christian family was different. This is especially true when it came to how they relate to each other.
Women Can’t Teach Men—Really?!
In this series, we have been looking at the place of women in the NT. In many ways, Christian women were just like all other ancient women. But in other ways, the NT presents a new idea of the role women played. This was especially the case when it came to public ministry.
What’s Paul’s issue with head coverings in Corinth?
What’s the story with head coverings in Corinth? Why does he tell the women to cover their heads when they pray but then tell the men to uncover their heads when they pray? In this video, we are on site in Corinth looking for answers to these questions. We will look at a possible reason why both the Corinthian women and the men were confused about this. And we’ll ask the question: what implications does it have for us today?
